Peak, by Dr. Marc Bubbs

I have recently read the book Peak, by Dr. Marc Bubbs. Peak is a book that unpacks 600+ research articles to identify the science behind elite athletic performers. However, the book uncovers that this literally can apply to EVERYONE and all types of performance, whether you want to excel at your job, your sport, or life.

The book has LOADS of information to share, but it simply boils down to 3 principles applied to 4 areas:

3 Principles:

  1. fundamentals, not fads

  2. consistency, not extreme effort

  3. patience, not rapid transformation

4 Areas:

FOUNDATION

  • Sleep

  • Gut microbiome

  • Blood sugar control

FUEL

  • Nutrition specific to your sport: Physique, Endurance, or Team sports nutrition

RECOVERY

  • Nutrition

  • Immune system health

  • Sleep

  • Stress management

  • Modalities - cold plunges, compression garments, heat/sauna, etc

  • Monitoring Rate of perceived exertion & total workloads

  • Heart Rate Variability Monitoring

SUPERCHARGE

  • Brain health - sleep, nutrition, supplementation

  • Emotions & Mindset - positive self-talk, confidence, mindfulness, self-compassion, etc

  • Leadership & Great Coaching

I found it so fascinating myself, and it struck deep with me as I have really enjoyed my own health journey over the years which has included many of these things! It was even great to see him discussing the relevance of Heart Rate Variability for those who use wearable technology to monitor strain and recoveries!
